Digital Distribution Music
The future of all music will be sold through digital distribution. Music, as a whole, is continuously changing as a result of technological advancements.
The music business, no longer needing middle men, such as major record labels, is a landscape that continually changes, and if you do not keep up with these changes, you will be easily left behind. The Block Money Billionaires, a marketing and promotions company in the digital distribution music industry, would like to give a little of our expertise in the realm of getting digital distribution for the world wide release of your album and/or single. Before even thinking of looking into something like this, start by asking, “Do you have a business plan for distribution?”, and within this plan you will need some of these key elements. Ask, “Do you have proper staff in key positions; retail sales, radio promotion, video promotion, marketing, publicity, street promotions, financial backing?” (very key position for whoever is involved). Without having all of these elements already in place you are already in a uphill battle to a 1000ft cliff with nowhere to go but down and out of the industry.
Questions for staffing your label
1.)Do the artists or owners of the label have experience and major connections in the industry?
2.)Have they ever sold a record before in their lives?
3.)How have they done it?
4.)What is the likelihood they will be able to do it again?
5.) Do they understand how the industry works?
6.) Will they still be in business down the road or fold if things don’t go as planned.
7.) Are they properly financed or are we in over your heads?
Properly financed means enough money to press, create and fill demand, and repeat this process for a few records in a row without depending on immediate income to sustain the company. These are the things a legitimate distributor will be considering before doing any business with your company. The skill in securing a distribution deal is how badly they want you and how much leverage or (power) you have when you approach them.
Without being a real record label there is no juice, no clout and no leverage to insure you will be payed, in other words no one cares bro, no one gives a shit about you, your little records or the fact you and your people think your the hottest on the planet. Someone who comes to a distributor with no experience selling records and we have seen this with friends of ours over and over, one album with no set plan to have others follow, and asks for an advance to market that record, is out of their damn mind, without pipeline it is difficult and next to impossible to get paid.
“Pipeline” is the release of subsequent albums that a distributor would be able to recoup any monies from, if there were returns on a prior release. Therefore it is another form of leverage to insure payment from a distributor. You have to look at your label or yourself from the perspective of others; the distributor, the retail stores, the promoters and the radio station. Until you understand what these particular outlets want, you can’t possibly supply what they need.
